As Artistic Director of new music and hybrid-arts production company, Kammerklang, Cameron’s compositional work has always been based in practical experimentation and exploration. He is an avid dabbler and appreciator of the various arts, having completed his honours in Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and currently studying dance trapeze and physical theatre at B&B Studios.
In 2007, Cameron resurrected the Sydney Eclectic Composers Society (SECS), a group aimed at creating performance opportunities for student composers, at the Sydney Conservatorium. During his 18 months as President, SECS premiered over 100 new works in 6 concerts for a variety of ensembles from solo instruments to wind band and electronics.
Cameron’s solo work for Claire Edwardes, The Colour of Woods (winner of Sydney University’s 2010 PALM People’s Choice award for Composition), is an exploration into the patterns of modern and popular ‘grooves’ keeping a driving pulse going for forward motion. Accessible and uplifting, The Colour of Woods exemplifies the nature of Cameron’s work as a composer and Artistic Director for Kammerklang. Orphic Hymn #3: Nyx (Night) was shortlisted for the same PALM award and Orphic Hymn #9: Selene (The Moon) was commissioned by the Australia Council for the Arts to be premiered by Kammerklang and Halcyon in 2010.
Cameron is currently workshopping his recent song cycle, Fragments of Solitude, for soprano and piano, based on the poetry of Luis de Gongora, and is completing his first concerto, composed for EWI and orchestra, entitled Electric Phoenix, for long-time collaborator Peter Smith.
